The Heart plays a vital role in the body system, some people call the heart “the engine of the body“. A heart attack doesn’t just happen to anyone without giving a sign, it has early signs just like any other sickness and prevention. If you are able to take precautions in the beginning, you can avoid the big heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases like stroke, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure. In this article, you will know the common signs of heart attack and how to prevent it.

What exactly causes a heart attack?

A heart attack happens when the flow of blood to the heart ceases. Blood flow to the heart ceases due to a blockage in the coronary artery. The artery blockage is a result of fatty deposits building up in the artery that makes the blood passage narrower and eventually block the artery. The heart needs blood to function well, during a heart attack it can’t get enough. Things can rapidly get worse in the absence of treatment. In some cases, a heart attack causes sudden death.

Symptoms of heart attack

Symptoms may include chest tightness, chest pain which can radiate all the way to the back, neck, shoulder, and jaw. For some women they feel like they are out of breath even without chest pain, they get nausea or fatigue.

Who is the most at risk of a heart attack?

Aside from old people, other people who are more likely to develop a heart attack include;

  • People who smoke and drink alcohol a lot.
  • Those who have diabetes.
  • People with high cholesterol.
  • Hypertensive people.
  • Those who are overweight.
  • Family history of cardiovascular disease happening at an early age (below 55)

How you can prevent heart attack

  • If you smoke and drink alcohol, stop it.
  • Aim for a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, eat chicken and fish instead of red meat.
  • Aim for a healthy weight or lose weight if you are obese.
  • Exercise regularly. Those that exercise are less likely to have cardiovascular disease.
  • Check your blood pleasure level regularly.
  • Know your family’s medical history.
  • Do not take any heart symptoms for granted. Talk to your doctor immediately if you have chest or heart pain.
